Hampi is situated in the state of Karnataka, India, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River.

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, a powerful kingdom that ruled much of southern India from the 14th to the 16th century.

The Musical Pillars of Hampi

In the Vitthala Temple complex, there are 56 musical pillars that produce different musical notes when tapped gently. These pillars are known as the "Saptaswara" pillars, which means "seven notes" in Sanskrit.

How it works

The musical pillars are made of granite and are arranged in a specific pattern. When tapped, each pillar produces a distinct musical note, ranging from bass to treble. The notes are believed to be inspired by the seven basic notes of Indian classical music, known as the "Saptak".

History and Significance

The musical pillars are believed to have been built during the reign of Krishnadeva Raya, a king of the Vijayanagara Empire, in the 16th century. The pillars are not only a marvel of engineering but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Hampi.

Preservation and Restoration

Unfortunately, the musical pillars are no longer allowed to be tapped, as the vibrations could damage the ancient structure. However, efforts are being made to preserve and restore the pillars, and visitors can still marvel at this incredible feat of ancient engineering and musical ingenuity.
